Aloo ki tikki/Indian potato patty

Aloo ki tikki; a popular,mouth watering Indian chaat. Its a simple mix of potatoes,peas and some mild spices that is held together with corn starch.
Aloo ki tikki
This recipe makes 10-12 tikkis
Time: 40 min

Ingredients:

4 large boiled potatoes
1/2 cup peas (soaked in warm water,optional)
1/2 cup moong dal (split yellow lentils)
1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
2 finely chopped green chilies
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp red chili powder
1/2 tsp amchoor powder (dry mango powder)
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp black salt
3 tsp corn flour (corn starch)
Pinch of asafoteida
Salt to taste
Oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Wash and boil moong dal in a pan along with turmeric and salt till it becomes soft.Drain.
  2. In the mean time mash boiled potatoes when still hot.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add a pinch of asafoteida.After that add boiled dal, peas,coriander leaves,green chilies,black salt,red chili powder and garam masala. Saute it for 5 minutes.
  4. Keep the mixture aside and let it cool.
  5. To the mashed potatoes add cornflour and little oil and make a soft dough.Divide it in 10-12 portions.
  6. Apply little water on your palm and take 1 portion of dough at a time. Roll it into a ball. 
  7. Press in the center and add a tsp of dal mixture to each ball. Roll it again in order to cover the dal mixture properly. Slightly press it to give shape.
  8. Heat oil in a pan . Deep fry the tikkis till golden brown on each side.
  9. Serve hot with green chutney and tamarind chutney.
  10. Sprinkle chat masala on top for extra flavor.

*If you are in a hurry,omit the dal and mix all the ingredients directly into the potato mixture.
* You can also use Chana dal in place of moong dal. (Soak it first for 3-4 hours)
* Spices in the given recipe can be altered as per your taste.
* Tikkis can also be shallow  fried.
